What is SMT placement machine?
SMT placement machines (also called placement robots) place SMD electronic components on the PCB before SMD soldering. These machines usually account for 50% of the total cost of the entire SMT production line.
Some surface mounters (pick and place machines) are very versatile, capable of placing many different electronic components used in electronic products, while others are dedicated to a few component types.
Pick-and-place machines use vacuum pick-up tools to secure components. Few people also use visual aided alignment. In general, placement machines provide better speed, accuracy, and flexibility than through-hole insertion machines.
Types of SMT placement machines
Fine pitch (0.5mm) and ultra-fine pitch (0.4mm-0.3mm) placement machines require higher dexterity and precise placement capabilities. Some of these machines cut and form the leads of the IC package when placed to avoid damage to the leads of the assembly due to improper handling. This feature improves the accuracy and precision of the process.
The number of machines required to properly assemble all surface mount components depends on the type of components assembled, the type of PCB and the throughput required by the manufacturer.
Dedicated SMT placement machine can achieve maximum throughput. Some companies also use dedicated robots to place surface mount components. Equipment is usually inexpensive, but the cost of software and hardware development is high.
